The onset of winter brought a slightly cooler U.S. hiring climate in December, with employers adding just 148,000 workers to their payrolls. Lower than expected employment gains for December, along with a net -9,000 in revisions to job totals for November and October, brought average employment gains to just over 171,000 per month for 2017. That translates into a little over two million jobs created in total in 2017—the seventh straight year that employment gains have topped the two million mark, but also the slowest pace of hiring since 2010.
