Metropolitan New York employees engage more with social media to find employment and manage their careers than those across the rest of the U.S.
Online job boards have become a dominant way that people find work in virtually every developed market, outpacing other avenues such as referrals and traditional print advertising.
According to the 2011 Kelly Global Workforce Index (KGWI), an annual survey that reveals a variety of viewpoints about work and the workplace, around one-fifth of all jobs in the United States are found online, and social media now accounts for a significant portion of this activity.
More people in Metropolitan New York search for jobs on social networking sites than almost anywhere else in the United States. Of all cities surveyed, only Boston could match New York in this trend. And, with almost one-third (32%) of New Yorkers saying they look for work in this way, the figure is a full 10 percentage points above the US average.
