The pace of hiring cooled off slightly in May, with U.S. employers adding 138,000 workers to their payrolls, below consensus expectations. The prior two months’ employment gains were also lower than initially reported: March was adjusted downward by 29,000, and April’s figures were adjusted down by 37,000. With the revisions, employment gains have averaged just 162,000 per month thus far in 2017, trailing last year’s pace of 187,000 jobs per month.
